The Huzule (also old Austrian Huzule ) is a pony breed and comes from the " Huzulei ", an area in the Eastern Carpathians north of the river Bistrita, where, as mountain farmers have settled the descendants of the Tatars and Cossacks, also called Hutsul.

Background information on the evaluation and breeding horses can be found at: exterior, interior and horse breeding.

Exterior

The Hutsul is a mostly falbfarbenes, brown, or piebald pony with a Height of 125 cm to 147 cm. Other colors are rare, molds are not approved for breeding. The long, straight head with straight or slightly concave profile, strong jowls, small ears, bright eyes and large nostrils is on a short, thick neck with a strong lower neck, which gives it a moderate erection. The little strong, broad withers follows a strong back and a short, sloping croup and low an attached tail. He has a strong, steep and short shoulder and a broad, deep and long fuselage. The hard, dry limbs are on small, very hard hooves. When Hutsul are often found light saber legs and cow hocks, also the hocks are often deficient. By finishing with the Arabs defects could be partially offset.

Interior

The Huzule is considered very robust, healthy and durable as well as strong instinct. His friendly character, the proverbial nerves of steel and slip resistance make it an almost ideal trail riding horse. He is docile and willing to work.

Breeding history

The mountain ponies lived there half wild in the Huzulei and served the people as carrying and draft animals. Their coat color is mostly brown, Isabell or Dun. They often have wild horse badge back as Cross, dorsal stripe and black Fesselstreifung, which suggests that they are more closely related to the tahki Tarpan.

Around 1870 they began in Vorwerk Luczyna of kk State Stud Radautz for k.u.k. Military Hutsul to cross with Konik, Arabs and English stallions. Thus, the horses were larger, but lost to hardness and toughness.

After the First World War, the inventory on Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Romania have been distributed. At the suggestion of Captain Michał Dutch ( from Sudowa Wyschnja ) was founded in 1924 in the " Huzulei " a studbook. Meanwhile, the Huzule is bred back inside. The following state stud farms for breeding of Huzule:

  • Romania: Lucina ( the municipality of Moldova Sulita )
  • Poland: Gładyszów, Odrzechowa
  • Slovakia: Topoľčiany
  • Hungary: Aggtelek

The horse race is run by the Republic of Austria in the course of the program for sustainable agriculture since 2001 as a threatened or endangered, worth preserving breed.
