Hugh Courtenay, 18th Earl of Devon

The Rt Hon Hugh Rupert Courtenay, 18th Earl of Devon, DL ( Born May 5, 1942) is a British peer. He was on 19 November 1998 to the entry into force of the House of Lords Act 1999 on 11 November 1999 as Cross Bencher a member of the House of Lords.

Career

Lord Devon is the son of Charles Christopher Courtenay, 17th Earl of Devon ( 1916-1998 ) and Lady Devon ( born Venetia Taylor). He went to Winchester College and got 1964 of Magdalene College, Cambridge University with a Bachelor of Arts. Until 1998, he inherited the county, he was known by the courtesy title of Lord Courtenay. In 1972 he was Captain in the Royal Devon Yeomanry and 1992 Deputy Lieutenant of Devon.

Lord Devon leads the family seat, Powderham Castle, and is an Associate of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors ( ARICS ). In 2008 he got his license for weddings and civil ceremonies at Powderham Castle by Devon County Council revoked after he had forbidden the use of its premises for a civil partnership a same-sex relationship in defiance of the Equality Act 2006.

Family

On September 9, 1967, he married Dianna Frances Watherston. She is Patron of the Helen Foundation in Devon. He has four children with her:

  • Lady Rebecca Eildon Courtenay ( b. 1969 ) ∞ Jeremy Lloyd Wharton. Three daughters: Alice Lucinda Wharton (* 1998), Emilia Rose Wharton (* 1999) and Tatiana Elizabeth Wharton (* 2002).
  • Lady Eleonora Venetia Courtenay ( b. 1971 ) ∞ Edward Robert Hamilton Clarkson.
  • Lady Camilla Mary Courtenay ( b. 1974 ).
  • Charles Peregrine Courtenay, Lord Courtenay ( b. 1975 ) ∞ Allison Joy, Lady Courtenay, born AJ Langer. Two children: Joscelyn Skye Courtenay The Hon (born 31 January 2007) and The Hon Jack Haydon Courtenay (born 16 August 2009).
