Huites Dam

BW

The Huites Dam ( Spanish Presa Presa Huites or Luis Donaldo Colosio ) was built between 1992 and 1995 north of Los Mochis on the Rio Fuerte in Sinaloa, Mexico. The construction work lasted despite controversy surrounding the construction of only 29 months.

The water reservoir has the irrigated agricultural area more than doubled in the Fuerte Valley below the dam. In addition, a contemporary hydropower plant was built and improved flood protection. High water there was in the past occasionally by heavy rains, hurricanes and snow melt in the Sierra Madre Occidental.

The construction costs were shared equally by private investors.

14 smaller villages had to be relocated, one of which was Huites, after the reservoir is unofficially called. Approximately 200 families with 1,300 people received compensation for their homes. They settle in the area around today Choix southwest of the dam. Only at the construction site itself had to be felled trees. The old buildings were left to stand and appear when water levels again. Similarly, one can still see the remains of 350 small haciendas that had to be abandoned.

At full filling of the reservoir covers 93 km ². At the lowest point of the dam, it is 150 meters deep. Many fish were exposed to have proliferated. The reservoir is therefore very rich in fish. The species found are: carp 40 %, 6% catfish, tilapia 40 %, 14% True perch.
