Development

Humppa evolved "by chance" in the late 1950s from the Foxtrot: in a radio broadcast was a band playing a funny parody of the Foxtrot. The success was surprising, and the group humppa Veikot was formed .. Mikko describes in his thesis four development phases of humppa:

Today, the humppa includes some elements of polka, punk or rock. The name humppa is onomatopoetic, that is, the sound of the word is similar to the music. The rhythm is somewhat similar to a spoken " to - paa ".

In the late 1970s and 80s humppa was again popular in Finland. Many new bands, also protest bands were founded, especially in Lapland, including Hannu Merkku, Koillis - humppa, Tarja Ylitalo and Souvarit.

Current representative

Famous representatives of the foxtrot, out of which developed the humpaa, was in the 1930s, the Dal- Lape orchestra.

The Finnish band Finntroll, Korpiklaani and Turisas blend traditional style with humppa Metal and Swedish (with Finntroll ) and Finnish and English (with Korpiklaani ) texts. Similarly, this band called the Norwegian band Trollfest their music the same themselves as " Norwegian humppa Metal".

A well -known outside Norway some band Kaizers Orchestra. The award-winning lineup was inspired by humppa among other things - the Norwegian term " Ompa " is ( " humppa until you die " ) entered in the title of their first album Ompa Til You Dør.
