Hwang Ji-u

Hwang Ji -u ( born January 25, 1952 in Haenam, Jeollanam ); is a South Korean poet.

Hwang Ji- u was born at the time of the Korean War in Haenam, he spent his childhood in Gwangju. From 1972, he studied aesthetics at the Seoul National University and joined the local literary circle. In 1973 he was forcibly recruited for participation in the demonstrations against the then military dictatorship of Park Chung -hee and was only in 1976 to continue his studies.

In 1983 he published his first volume of poetry, for which he was awarded the Kim Soo- Yeoung price. For his work he received numerous important awards such as the Hyundae literary award, the Sowol Poetry Prize and the Daesan Literary Award. Since 1994, Hwang Ji- u is a professor of creative writing at the Hanshin University.
