Hyatt Howe Waggoner

Hyatt Howe Waggoner (born 19 November 1913 in Pleasant Valley, New York, † October 13, 1988 in Hanover, New Hampshire ) was an American literary scholar, who is particularly emerged with work on Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Waggoner studied at Middlebury College ( BA 1935) and the University of Chicago ( MA 1936). In 1942 he received his doctorate at Ohio State University for Ph.D. 1939-42 he taught at the University of Omaha. From 1942 to 1956 was professor of English literature at the University of Kansas City. In 1956 he followed a call from Brown University. There he directed from 1960 to 1970 the unit " American Civilization" ( a forerunner of American Studies, which slowly as a discipline was first produced at the time). In 1979 he became Professor Emeritus.
