Hydrostachys

Hydrostachys (gr. " Wasserähre " ) is the only plant genus of the family of Hydrostachyaceae. The home ranges of the species are only in the capensis and Madagascar.

Description

Hydrostachys species are mostly annuals or rarely perennial herbaceous plants that grow submerged in fresh water. They form tubers and roots in a body of water. The submerged leaves are simple, pinnate or compound; they often look like small fern leaves. They are small (sometimes not visible ) Stipules present.

The plants are usually dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ) or rarely monoecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ). In aged men inflorescences small, unisexual flowers are grouped together; they are above the water surface. Bracts are not available. The inconspicuous male flowers consist of only one stamen. In the female flowers two carpels are fused into a superior ovaries. They form seed capsules which contain many seeds.
