Hyoseris frutescens

Hyoseris frutescens

Hyoseris frutescens is a species of the genus Hyoseris in the sunflower family ( Asteraceae). It is native only to Malta.

Features

Hyoseris frutescens is a perennial, herbaceous plant. It grows as a basal rosette, their glossy dark green, fleshy leaves are 5-15 inches long and cut down to the midrib. The numerous individual, more or less rounded lobes are sessile, winged at the base but not amplexicaul and pointed approximately at the outer end.

The flowering period extends from late summer to late spring. The far down diffracted inflorescence axis is 5 to 20 inches long and is terminated with a single basket, which consists entirely of ray florets that are inwardly always shorter from the outside. The outer bracts are short, lanceolate, the inner twice as long and lanceolate - ovate.

Occurrence

Hyoseris frutescens is found only in Malta, where it grows on rocky sites near the coast. The species is rare.

System

The species was first described in 1988 by the Italian botanists Salvatore Brullo and Pietro Pavone.
