Hystricomorpha
Porcupine ( Hystrix cristata )
The porcupine relatives ( Hystricomorpha ) are a suborder of rodents ( Rodentia ).
The morphological criteria for this submission are largely based on the construction of the lower jaw and skull, especially the zygomatic bone. A further differentiation was made to allow the mandrel tail squirrel relatives who were formerly also sometimes included as well, are now classified as a separate submission by molecular genetic studies.
This suborder includes nearly 300 species, most of which are common in the Americas.
