Hyun Ki-young

Life
Hyun Ki Young was born in 1941 on the island of Jeju and experienced at the age of seven years, the Jeju massacre. This traumatic experience complicated its development in youth, and made him equally early recognize his literary destiny.
He studied didactics for teaching English at Seoul National University and, after graduating in 1967 at a middle school and wrote novels. In 1975 he debuted with the narrative father. which was awarded by the Dong -a Ilbo newspaper. In 1979 his short story Suni's aunt (English Aunt Suni ). Hyun Ki Young thus the first who mentioned the Jeju massacre in writing, which was forbidden at that time due to the restrictions imposed by the South Korean government secrecy. The author was arrested and tortured for three days.
1986 Hyun received the Shin Dong- yeop promotion for writers. In 1990 he was honored with the Manhae Literature Prize and in 1999 with the Hankook Ilbo Literature Prize.
Mainly to Hyun Ki Young employs in his works with the Jeju massacre. In addition to his literary career, he was director of the Institute for the Study of the 3rd April and Chairman of the Social and Cultural Council of Jeju. In addition, he was chairman of the Union of Writers for National Literature and Director of the Foundation for Korean culture and art.
