Iberg Castle, Aargau

P3

The ruin Iberg is a former hill fort on the same mountain on the denunciation of the community Riniken in the Swiss canton of Aargau. It is now in ruins and only a few remnants of the ruins can be seen.

History of the castle

The castle was built in the 11th century on the northeast edge of the Iberg. This first system consisted of a main building, a goal and two outbuildings. For this purpose, the castle had a moat, which should protect them from attacks from the south. Since neither the castle nor the inhabitants of present written evidence, the archaeological investigations are the only clues that provide information about the castle on the Iberg. At the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century a fire destroyed the castle. During reconstruction, the plant was expanded by further trenches and a tower. The castle was, however, still leave before completion of the work. Because the area around the castle was largely owned by the Habsburgs and the monastery Murbach, a foundation of the castle by the Habsburgs seems likely.
