Ibrahim Nasir Rannabandeyri Kilegefan ( Dhivehi: އ ި ބ ް ރ ާ ހ ި މ ް ނ ާ ޞ ި ރ ު ރ ަ އ ް ނ ަ ބ ަ ނ ޑ ޭ ރ ި ކ ި ލ ޭ ގ ެ ފ ާ ނ ު; Ibraahim Naasiru Rannabandeyri Kileygefaanu ), KCMG, NGIV (born 2 September 1926 in Fuvammulah, Maldives, † November 22, 2008 in Singapore ) was a Maldivian politician, under Sultan Muhammad Fareed Didi 1957-1968 Prime Minister and from 1968 to 1978 the first President of the Second Republic of the Maldives.

Early years

Ibrahim Nasir was born the son of Ahmad Didi and Didi Nayaage Aisha. Nasir comes from the Maldive Royal dynasties of Huraa and Dhiyamigili. Nasir was married three times and was the father of five children. His first wife was Aisha Zubayr ( Tuttudon Goma ), whom he married in 1950 and with whom he had a son named Ahmad Nasir. In 1953 he married Maryam Saeed Didi, with whom he had two sons, Ali Nasir Muhammad and Nasir. 1969 Nasir married a third time, this time Naseema Muhammad Kaleyfan. She was the mother of his youngest son Ismail Nasir and his only daughter Aishath Nasir. Nasir visited the Madharasatu - Saniyya School in Male ', which was called from 1969 Majeediyya school. After completing his schooling in Male ', he studied in Sri Lanka.

Policy

Prime minister

Nasir was on 12 December 1957 until his inauguration as the first President of the Second Republic Prime Minister under Sultan Muhammad Fareed Didi.

Presidency

Nasir was introduced in the Office of the President of the Second Republic of Maldives on 11 November 1968. He was mainly attributed to the modernization and opening of the long-isolated and nearly unknown island state. His main achievement was to have each of the Maldives to the United Nations to take up even against the resistance of some other nations, which found them tricky, a small nation. He laid the foundations for revenue sources, of which the Maldives are dependent: the fishing and tourism.

Are attributed to him, other improvements, such as the introduction of a curriculum in the English style in the public schools of the country. He also brought television and radio in the country. Nasir abolished Vaaru, a tax on the people who live on the islands outside Malé, and had built the first international airport in the Maldives Malé International Airport. Before he retired, he filed a motion in Parliament, according to which no one should be elected for more than two terms as president. This application was rejected by the Parliament.

Later life and death

On Ibrahim Nasir followed Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who had been under Nasir Minister of Transport and permanent ambassador to the U.S., for thirty years (1978-2008) as president after. Nasir was when his mandate ended on December 7, 1978 after Singapore. In 1981, he was sentenced to a prison sentence for corruption and planning a coup d'etat in the absence, but was later pardoned.

On November 22, 2008 Nasir died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore at the age of 82 years. The cause of death is unknown. However, he had kidney problems that burdened him before his death. Nasir's body was taken to the Maldives, where he was laid in Theemuge, the presidential palace in Malé on 23 November. The day was declared a national holiday in the Maldives and tens of thousands came to see Nasir's corpse, which was open to the public during a ceremony on the square of the Republic, before being sent to Theemuge. In the presidential palace Nasir unpaid including the current president Mohamed Nasheed and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom their respect. His funeral prayers after the Fajr prayers ( Sunrise prayer ) on 24 November, were led by Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul -Bari. After Nasir was buried in the Friday Mosque ( Hukuru Miskkiy ) nearby cemetery during the sunrise. Nasir left three children, Ahmad Nasir, Ismail Nasir and Nasir Aishath. His other two sons died some years before him.

Criticism

Nasir was criticized for his authoritarian methods and the repression of political activity during his tenure, mainly because of its crackdown on an uprising by the people of Thinadhoo, Addu and Huvadu Atoll, who formed a rival government with great reference to the British for a short time.
