IC3

The DSB - MF is in Denmark for Danske Statsbaner by the manufacturer ABB Scandia Randers -designed, three-part diesel train for inter-regional traffic.

The design is widely used under the name of IC3 in Denmark since 1989. Since 1993 there is a further development called IR4 (see DSB series ER); a four-part electric multiple unit which can be driven with the IC3 in the train. For the Danish private railways also a two-piece, easy -equipped variant was developed under the name of IC2.

Design and technology

Its special feature is a fold-away cab, which is umfunktionierbar to a passage. In this way, a maximum of five IC3 and IR4 - units can be coupled to a continuous train. Joining multiple units via automatic Scharfenberg couplers. The car transition is draft- tight thanks to the rubber bead. The rubber beads are usually filled with compressed air and thus kept in the form of, for coupling and uncoupling they are emptied.

One unit consists of three car bodies ( motor vehicles MFA trailers FF motor car MFB ), resting on four bogies (two of Jacob's bogies ). It has the wheel arrangement (1A ) ( A1) (1A ) ( A1), four diesel engines manufacturer Deutz, a mechanical power transmission and reaches a top speed of 180 km / h The original construction of the type Deutz engines BF8L513CP (V8 - cylinder, air- cooled) had a capacity of 294 kW. As of 2005, the vehicles were repowered and all engines by new type TCD2015 (V6 - cylinder, water-cooled), also from Deutz, replaces each with 330 kW. The contract included 380 drive modules with a total volume of 55 million euros. As part of the repowering were the original transmission (5 -speed automatic transmission from Ecomat 5HP600 the manufacturer ZF Friedrichshafen) with new 12-speed automatic transmission of the type AS Tronic Rail (variant 12 AS 2303 R), also, replaced by ZF Friedrichshafen.

The traction motors are two A- motors, which are necessary for energy supply, and two B- engines for the pure driving. Even if only one A- engine is ready for use, continued driving is possible.

The trainsets are equipped for Germany with the train control system ATC for Denmark and the units MF 5076-5092 with PZB 90 ( inductive magnet ). These are used among other things for the Euro City trains on the crow flies from Copenhagen via Puttgarden and Aarhus via Padborg to Hamburg.

To trains of similar design is in the class ET, which operates between Denmark and Sweden. These trains are the IC3 Although outwardly similar, but it is a new development that can not be driven with IC3 or IR4 in the composite.

Trains of the type IC3 were sold to Sweden and Israel, where they are in use.

The unit MF 5006 turned on with 204.6 km / h speed record between a Danish Årup and Middelfart on 22 October 1991.

Use in Sweden and Israel

Of the original 20 in Sweden under the name Y2 ( 1367-1386 ) used in regional traffic on the Stångådalsbanan and Tjustbanan IC3 sets today still drive the units from 1379 to 1384 as Kustpilen. 1367, 1368, 1370 and 1371 arrived in 2003 by the Blekinge Kustbana to DSB and were redrawn in MF 5093-5096.

Y2 was set in 1376 after an accident in Nosaby in 2004, repaired and sold with the other nine vehicles to Israel .. They were first encountered between Beersheba and Nahariya in use and are now on the entire Israeli rail network and bond Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

2011, there were considerations to repurchase trainsets from Israel due to lack of vehicles in Denmark. According to the manufacturer the necessary knowledge is available for a restructuring of the vehicles, and the unit trains could run for a revision for 20 years.
