Ice hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics

In the XXI. 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver were held two competitions in ice hockey. In the men's tournament came to twelve teams, the women's tournament was played with eight teams.

The preliminary groups resulted from the prior IIHF World Ranking of 2008 and the results of the qualifying tournaments. The men's tournament began on the 16th, the women's tournament is already February 13, 2010, and thus one and four days post the opening ceremony on February 12. Women's final was held on 25 February, which took the men on February 28, the final day of the games.

Venues

The matches of the men's and women's tournament were played in two stages in Vancouver, the Canada Hockey Place, known as General Motors Place home of the NHL franchises Vancouver Canucks, and at UBC Thunderbird Arena, which was specially built for the games. The Canada Hockey Place holds 18,810 seats, while the UBC Thunderbird Arena offers 7,200 spectators.

To prepare the General Motors Place for the Olympic Winter Games, the Vancouver Canucks contested between 27 January and 13 March 2010 14 games in a row away from home. This is the longest streak in the history of the National Hockey League.

Changes

The 2010 Winter Olympics marked the first time that the games were held in a city -based a franchise of the National Hockey League and it was at the same time allows players the NHL to participate in the competitions.
