Idris Jones

Idris Jones ( born 1943 ) was until 2009 the Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway and the primate of the Scottish Episcopal Church.

Life

Jones was educated at St David's University College Lampeter, reaching in 1964 a Bachelor of Arts. After further studies at the University of Edinburgh with a degree in theology, he was ordained as a deacon in 1967 and 1968 as a priest. Until 1970 he worked as a curate at the Anglican church in Stafford. 1970 to 1973 he was Precentor of St Paul 's Cathedral in Dundee. After that, he was team vicar at St Hugh's Church in Gosforth for seven years. In 1980 he became rector of the church in Montrose (Angus ). Jones received his doctorate in 1984 from the New York Theological Seminary. He was an Anglican chaplain at the University of Dundee and rector of Invergowrie 1989. 1992 to 1998 he was Team Rector of municipalities in Ayr, Maybole and Girvan. 1998 Jones was ordained as a bishop for the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. On 18 May 2006 he was elected by his fellow bishops to the primate of the Scottish Episcopal Church, succeeding Bruce Cameron. In this election is a tie vote between him and the other candidates, which was determined by lot revealed; afterwards he was chosen unanimously.
