Illiers-Combray

Illiers -Combray is a commune with 3404 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Eure- et- Loir in the Centre region. The city is situated on the left bank of the Loir, 25 km from Chartres.

Name

The name Illiers is a variation of Hilaire, Latin Hilarius, by Hilary of Poitiers.

The town became famous especially by Marcel Proust, who described it under the name of Combray in the novel - cycle "In Search of Lost Time " (À la recherche du temps perdu ). Today's composite naming was decided in 1971 and published as a decree in the Journal Officiel. The occasion was the one hundredth birthday of the writer Proust. Illiers -Combray is the only French Commune, which carries a resulting from a literary work name.
