In the Jungle of Cities is a drama by Bertolt Brecht.

This early work of Brecht has emerged between 1921 and 1924. The world premiere of the first version under the title In the Jungle was on May 9, 1923, Munich Residenz Theater and was directed to a scandal, the second version under the final title was in 1927 by Carl Ebert in the Hessian State Theatre in Darmstadt.

Action

In this play Brecht, who in the years of development in the phenomenon of the boxing match had great interest set out, in the giant city of Chicago a struggle between two men.

Without apparent reason provokes the timber merchant Schlink, who is from Malaysia, the employed in the public library George Garga and gets by with him in a heated argument. Here, the store where Garga operates is damaged and released Garga. However, Garga avenges himself by, directed Shlinks timber business that this leaves him to reason. Then he wants to go to Tahiti, to be free; because Schlink now also Gargas family pulls into the fight, Garga must abandon this plan.

Gargas girlfriend Jane and his sister Marie are now forced by Schlink and his friends from the underworld of prostitution. Garga, however, can not be put off and takes Jane despite her lost honor for his wife. Schlink now claims, however, against the authorities, Garga was a slider, so this has to go to prison, which also takes his family cohesion.

Now Garga begins to fight back not only by its own actions, but shows Schlink shortly before discharge from the three -year sentence for the rape of his sister Marie, so that Schlink in a thicket have to hide because he feared being lynched as a stranger and an accused to become. Now, however, the fight turns into a strange mutual bondage ratio, because both take together to escape. His reconstituted timber trade will Schlink Garga passed and confesses his love. However, when Garga is not ready for reconciliation, Schlink takes poison. Garga burns down the wood shop and goes to New York.

Interpretation approach

Brecht no need for a realistic comprehensible action; it apparently was his main goal, to show the entanglement of two men in their struggle, which as such is in the center of the piece.
