In the Nightside Eclipse is the first regular album by the Norwegian black metal band Emperor.

Genesis

The album was recorded in July 1993 in Eirik Hundvins " Grieg Hall " studio. With I Am the Black Wizards, it contains one of the most famous Emperor title that was already heard on the EP Emperor. Some other songs were originally written with founding member Mortiis who contributed the lyrics. He was replaced by bassist Tchort 1993. Beyond the Great Vast Forest is a newly recorded and heavily modified version of My Empire's Doom from the demo.

At the time of publication was by the band members alone Ihsahn at large. Drummer Faust was in prison because he had murdered a gay man in the Olympic Park in Lillehammer and had been involved in several arsons. Samoth was convicted of church arson and Tchort for assault and robbery. Due to the incarceration and problems with the record company, the album's release was delayed by one year after the end of the recordings. The long imprisonment of Faust finished at the same time his membership in Emperor. His successor was Trym Torson.

The cover was drawn by Kristian " Necrolord " Wåhlin which (eg, Bathory, Lake of Tears, Dissection ) also designed the album art for many other metal bands.

The album was released in 1994 by Candlelight Records on CD and Megarock as picture disc, in the following year by Modern Invasion Music and Century Black on CD and by Candlelight Records on LP.

In 1998, the album with the cover versions A Fine Day to Die ( Bathory ) and Gypsy ( Mercyful Fate ) was republished, the intro and Into the Infinity of Thoughts were combined into one.

Music style

The album was recorded by Eirik " Pytten " Hundvin in the typical for that time raw sound and so contains the characteristic hardness, which in most albums of the second black metal shaft as De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem and A Blaze the Northern Sky by Darkthrone, coined. Unlike the other albums in the second wave, the album contains amplified synthesizer and keyboard passages.

Importance

In the Nightside Eclipse is one of the most important albums of the second wave of Black Metal dar. Steve Huey described it in the All Music Guide as " the definitive Norwegian black metal album ".
