Institute of technology

Technical University (TU) are doctorate legitimate institutions offering a wide range of engineering disciplines and science courses, usually supplemented by other subjects.

The majority of the technical universities was created by the transformation of technical colleges (TH ), which usually existed for 100 to 200 years. The conversion in the 1970s and 1980s brought them alongside the prestige desired by the policy and the economy a larger proportion of basic research and the addition of concomitant compartments, eg in the fields of philosophy, communication, management, advertising, sociology and Economics.

Almost all technical colleges were renamed universities; Exceptions are the Rheinisch- Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen and the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in Zurich and Lausanne.

Nine technical universities in Germany have joined in the initiative TU9, the publicity reports, in particular, in the forthcoming Europe-wide standardization of qualifications to speak.

A cooperation agreement between the universities of technology, there are also between the three Austrian institutions: Vienna University of Technology, Graz University of Technology and the University of Leoben in 2010 the club TU Austria founded around common research priorities, develop together to take a stand and to exploit synergies.

Faculties and departments

The typical arrangement of a technical university follows the "classical" engineering subjects. In general, the courses of study include:

  • Electrical engineering with power engineering, communications engineering, electronics
  • Engineering including traffic engineering ( automotive, aviation and space technology, ...), process engineering, plastics engineering, etc.
  • Civil Engineering
  • Architecture
  • Mathematics
  • Natural sciences physics
  • Chemistry
  • Geodesy and Geosciences

From about 1975, the following subjects were added:

  • Computer science or computer engineering
  • Satellite technology and space ( isolated )

Furthermore, also some interdisciplinary programs were out:

  • Computer science engineer
  • Mechatronics
  • Materials Science
  • Media Technology
  • Medical technology and medical computer science
  • Optronics
  • Technical Physics
  • Urban and Regional Planning
  • Traffic Engineering
  • Economic computer science
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Biochemical and Chemical Engineering
