Interactive Systems Corporation

General referred Interactive Unix, the Unix operating systems the company INTERACTIVE Systems Corp. ( ISC) in Santa Monica (USA, California). In particular, but the operating system INTERACTIVE UNIX System V/386 is so common ( originally 386/ix ) from the UNIX System V family meant.

History

IS / 1, IS / IS and 3 /5

Published in 1978, the software company INTERACTIVE Systems Corporation ( ISC) with the operating system IS / 1, the first commercial UNIX operating system. On the basis of UNIX V6 ( 6th Edition ) IS / 1, though, was the most PDP -11 systems.

1983, based on UNIX System III advanced IS / 3 was released, which also supported the minicomputer architectures VAX and MicroVAX. In Germany the company Danet took over in Darmstadt sales and technical support to the customers. In turn Danet was supported by AT & T Bell Telephone in Amsterdam.

As the market for mini-computer manufacturer Digital Equipment Corporation ( DEC) has received increasing competition, in 1984 set the further development of this line after the publication of based on UNIX System V version of IS / 5.

In March 1983, the first PC was introduced with a disk on the IBM with the IBM XT. For this, the company would provide an early ISC commissioned to develop a UNIX operating system, so that the first version of the operating system PC / ix (Personal Computer Interactive eXecutive ), an early port of IS / 3 has already been completed in 1982.

The IBM XT had 640 KB of memory and 10 MB of hard disk space - networks at that time were not yet in use. Nevertheless, to enable the simultaneous working of up to three users, additional terminals could be operated via two serial interfaces. However, often it has been used for the connection of a conventional daisy wheel printers time, so that only one additional terminal could be used.

The operating system was delivered in a black slipcase with the characteristic time for IBM red rose. The primary purpose for PC / ix was the desktop publishing (DTP ). To this end, the ISC developed troff -compatible word processor IN / text, and delivered it out with PC / ix.

Appeared in 1984 under the name IN / ix a more advanced version with support for Intel 80286 processors. Building on published ISC 1985, the operating system 386/ix, the base of the source code on UNIX System V Release 3.0 has been updated. 386/ix already supported the emerging 32-bit architecture of the Intel 80386 processor. In order to achieve the highest possible compatibility with the Microsoft Xenix UNIX derivative components of this were also included in the system.

Over the following years was 386/ix developed based on UNIX System V Release 3.2 and later sold under the brand name INTERACTIVE UNIX. Since SCO has been more successful with its competitor SCO Unix, but remained INTERACTIVE UNIX rather granted a niche.

INTERACTIVE UNIX System V/386

As AT & T UNIX System V Release 4 brought out another version of Unix, also updated INTERACTIVE own product. At the same time, Intel had now brought out with Intel Unix System V/386 own UNIX derivative, but which was soon discontinued.

In September 1991, Eastman Kodak sold the business branch INTERACTIVE Systems Products Division at SunSoft (a subsidiary of Sun Microsystems), which continued the INTERACTIVE UNIX product under that name. By buying could acquire for x86 Sun valuable know- how from the field of PC- Unix to the development of Solaris 2.0. In July 1998 was released the last version of INTERACTIVE UNIX INTERACTIVE UNIX System V/386 with 4.1.1 and the support set in July 2006 by Sun finally.
