InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam

The Amstel Hotel (also Amstel Hotel, official name InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam) is one of the most prestigious hotels in the Netherlands. The 1866 to 1867 as the first Amsterdam " Grand Hotel " built house is located southeast of the canal belt on Professor Tulpplein 1 right on the river Amstel. The building stands as Rijksmonument historical monument since 1974.

The Amsterdam physician and philanthropist Samuel Sarphati (1813-1866) financed and organized the construction of numerous facilities and buildings that contributed to the positive urban development middle of the 19th century. 1863 Sarphati presented the plans for Amstel Hotel, the renowned architect Cornelis Outshoorn had designed in his behalf.

Used as a typical representative of the eclecticism Outshoorn different styles. Thus, the pediment above all classical elements, while the interior matches the style of the Renaissance. The original plans called for four wings of the building with a main wing in front of a projected Boulevard (now Sarphatistraat ). Due to problems with financing and the interim death of the client ultimately only one wing of the building was built. 1867 successes the opening of prestige construction.

In 1885, the hotel was equipped with an elevator, 1892 was followed by the connection to the power grid. The hotel from 1899 to 1900 received another floor, designed by architect Dirk Margadant. The wide cornice above the third floor indicated today at the former level of the building. From 1917 there was running water in the hotel. 1953 a part of the terrace has been glazed on the Amstel River. Today's conservatory was built during a two-year renovation in the year 1992.

The Amstel Hotel belonged for many years to InterContinental Hotels Group, which sold the house in 2006 to the U.S. bank Morgan Stanley. 2011, the Lebanese businessman Toufic was Aboukhater owner of the hotel. The management remains in the hands of the InterContinental Hotels Group.

Among the best known hotel guests included Queen Elizabeth II, Henry Kissinger, Audrey Hepburn, Steven Spielberg, Rihanna, The Rolling Stones, U2 and Robbie Williams. The Amstel Hotel is now a five-star hotel with 55 rooms and 24 suites. It has a swimming pool, a gym, a bar, a brasserie and the Michelin -starred restaurant La Rive.
