The Interlaken Ost train station is in addition to the Interlaken West train station of the larger of the two stations of the Berne community Interlaken. It is used by trains of two different gauges operated: standard gauge and meter gauge.

History

The station was opened on 1 July 1874 by the then Bödelibahn as Interlaken customs house, as this (now Interlaken West) extended their range by then- station Interlaken to Bönigen. 1890 Interlaken customs house to the starting point of the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB ), a meter-gauge train to Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. 1893 was followed by the western continuation of Bödelibahn along Lake Thun Thun, Interlaken was thus connected continuously to the Swiss railway network. 1916, the importance of the Interlaken Ost railway station as traffic junction again to, as the last section of the Brünigbahn was opened to traffic between Brienz and Interlaken.

On August 11, 1952 came in the Interlaken Ost train station because of a misunderstanding a freight car with a group of Bönigen -down passenger train together. Despite the relatively slow speed four passengers were killed and at least ten seriously injured, as the old wooden wagon could not withstand the impact.

Reception building

The existing today reception building dates from 1917 and was built as the hub function of the station increased by the Brünigbahn opening again. Today, the station building is a listed building.

Plant

The station complex comprises eight platform tracks, which are affiliated to five Perrons. It is interesting that at the Interlaken Ost train station three railway lines are linked, all of which end or start here. Through trains are none. From the western direction, the standard- Thun Railway runs at a voltage of 15,000 volts AC to the station, but which is not a terminal station: The continuous passenger of Bödelibahn to Bönigen was indeed set in 1969 - since then end all trains at Interlaken Ost - but is the BLS workshop continues in Bönigen, so that the route is still to be operated.

Although the Brünigbahn and BOB have the same gauges, but different voltages: Today's traveled from the central railway Brünigbahn line possesses due to its SBB past a voltage of 15,000 volts AC, the BOB routes to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald 1500 volts DC. Because of these differences, each station has its own tracks, there are no tracks with AC power supply in the contact wires. Although there are rail connections from the Central Railway and the BOB, which were previously used mainly for the exchange of cars, but this is no longer practiced.

Traffic

The station is served by five railway companies, the SBB, the BLS, the Central Railway, the BOB and DB, the latter operates its trains on the Swiss section, together with the SBB.

Long-distance traffic

The station is one to two times every hour of intercity trains of the SBB uses that are extended five times a day as ICE to Berlin. In addition there are hourly inter-regional connections to the central train to Lucerne and some daily Golden Pass Panoramic trains of BLS to Zweisimmen. Direct train to Zurich HB existed until 2007, but can not be performed due to lack of train paths of the base tunnel on the Lötschberg and introduced in 2007 full node Interlaken Ost due, because the stay in Bern and Spiez would be too low to accommodate connections. Instead, take these trains to Basel.

Regional Transport

In regional transport the BLS, the BOB and the central railway operate. The BOB performs a half hour with wing trains, which are divided into Zweilütschinen into two parts to Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. In the transport direction Spiez no exact hour is offered for two overlapping two- hours bars that are spaced a few minutes with each other. The regional train to Meiringen example of the compressed schedule, together with the Inter Regio in about a half hour on the Bernese side.
