International Geographical Union

The International Geographical Union (English: International Geographical Union; French: Union Geographical location international ), short IGU, is an international scientific organization dedicated to promoting geographical research, and the global governing body for the participating national geographical societies. She is a member of the International Science Council ( ICSU ) and the International Council for Social Sciences ( ISSC ).

History

International Geographical Congresses have been held regularly since 1871, the IGU itself was founded in 1922 in Brussels and the following year a member of the predecessor organization of the International Scientific Council. The first regional conference of the IGU was held in 1955. From 1964 there was a close cooperation with the International Cartographic Association. Their notices published in the official publication of the IGU, the IGU Bulletin, also the scientific meeting of the two associations were held at the same location. Beginning of the 1980s, the collaboration was dissolved in these aspects again. The archive of the organization is located since 2002 in the Villa Celimontana in Rome.

Structure

The central committee of the IGU is the Annual General Meeting, consisting of delegates from the member countries, which meets at the international geographical congresses every four years. Those of the 100 member countries of the committees that are formed by scientific societies, are full members and have voting rights for the offices of the IGU. Countries where no suitable scientific society is able to participate as associate members in the general meetings, but have no voting rights in administrative matters.

The Executive Committee consists of the President, the Secretary and Treasurer, and nine Vice-Presidents ( eight elected as such, among them the direct representative of the President, and the President of the previous legislative period ). They are elected for four years, and the President may not be re-elected, the Secretary-General and the Vice President once each.

Individual topics will be developed in smaller working groups, especially in the commissions, each covering specific areas of expertise. For the coordination of special international projects such as the International Geography Olympiad since 1998, there is also the instrument of the Task Force.
