Iron ( II) iodide is an inorganic chemical compound of the iron from the group of iodides.
Production and representation
Iron ( II) iodide may be obtained by reaction of iron with iodine at 500 ° C.
Extremely finely divided iron (II ) iodide is obtained by thermal decomposition of Tetracarbonyldiiodidoeisen (II ) Fe ( CO) 4I2.
Properties
Iron ( II) iodide is a red-violet to black -hygroscopic solid which is soluble in water, ethanol and diethyl ether. In solution and in moist air, rapid oxidation. It is whitish in the air. The solution in water is colorless. It has a trigonal crystal structure of cadmium (II ) hydroxide - type with the space group P3m1 (a = 404 pm, c = 675 pm ). The tetrahydrate is a black solid which is soluble in ethanol and water and decomposes at 90-98 ° C.
Use
Iron ( II) iodide is used as active ingredient in homeopathic medicine. In the application, it is known as jodatum Ferrum. The effect ascribed particularly against gland diseases is scientifically not confirmed.
The tetrahydrate is used as a catalyst and for the preparation of Alkaliiodiden.
