Isis (horn-rock band)

Isis was one consisting only of women, American jazz fusion band of the 1970s.

History

Isis was founded in 1972 by Carol MacDonald and Ginger Bianco, two former members of the Women's rock band Goldie & The Gingerbreads. The repertoire of the first eight -piece band consisted entirely of self-written and arranged songs. To be taken seriously in the music industry and their live concerts, had to Isis, as her colleagues continuously make other women in bands, persuasion. The number of bands that managed to be taken with a renowned record company, therefore remained in the 1970s, still very small.

Produced in 1974 George " Shadow" Morton with Isis, the first record for the band. This was the first release of popular music with female brass instruments and reminiscent of earlier works by Blood, Sweat & Tears.

The second, produced by Allan Toussaint album Is not No Backin 'Up Now appeared in 1975. It contained songs that unexpectedly open themed for that time homosexual love among women. For Carol MacDonald carried the main responsibility. Although most of the participating women were not a lesbian, the band received so that an image that probably hindered the sale of their records. Carol MacDonald was well aware of this, but nevertheless risked confrontation with the current social norms.

In 1977, the final Isis album Breaking Through appeared, in the meantime grown to ten members of the band had again been reduced to six. Among the new additions, there was this time Margo Lewis, who had been a keyboard player and organist already at Goldie & The Gingerbreads Carol MacDonald and Ginger collaborator of Bianco. With the producer Len Barry the ladies this time managed a melody stronger, more to the fashion of the time adapted album. Despite the undoubted musical quality, the work can miss the originality of past releases.

Within the seven years in which Isis in the music business were active, one by one over seventy (70 ) at various musicians from the band, to say goodbye again after a shorter or longer time. The band offered so many young musicians to enter the music industry, which could follow some of them quite successful careers.

2001 began Carol MacDonald, Ginger Bianco and Lolly bee box again in order to form a band and perform under the name of Isis in New York clubs.

On 12 March 2007, significantly, the day of the annual initiation ceremonies for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Carol MacDonald died after a long illness.
