Islandia is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean at the transition to Biscayne Bay off the coast of the U.S. state of Florida in Miami -Dade County.

History

In 1950, there were plans for the development of Islandia by an extension of the Overseas Highway from North Key Largo to Key Biscayne. Since the County government, however, the building rights on Key Biscayne could not acquire the plans were dropped. Nevertheless Islandia 1960 registered as City, as 13 of the 18 islanders voted by referendum for it. Subsequently, development plans were, this time by the residents, again proclaimed. Here at Islandia Hotel, golf courses and more apartments should arise. It has even already procured a bulldozer to flatten the terrain on the main island Elliott Key, but the construction project following the acquisition of the main island by the federal government finally prevented. In 1980 the area was provided by the establishment of Biscayne National Park under protection. On 16 March 2012, the archipelago was demoted from the status of a city on an unincorporated community.
