Jacek Dukaj

Jacek Dukaj (born 30 July 1974 in Tarnów, Poland) is a Polish science fiction and fantasy writer.

Life

He studied philosophy at the Jagiellonian University. His literary debut was at the age of 16 years with the narrative Złotą galera ( The Golden Galley ), which was published in 1990 in the journal Fantastyka. For the Janusz A. Zajdel Prize, he was nominated nine times. He won it in 2000 for the story Katedra ( Cathedral ), 2001 with the novel Czarne oceany ( Black oceans ) and 2003 of the Interior Pieśni ( other songs). The digitally animated film adaptation Katedra by Tomasz Bagiński was nominated for an Oscar in 2003. 2008 Dukaj received the Kościelski Prize for the novel Lód, 2009 for the same novel, the Literature Prize of the European Union.

Work

Works by Dukaj were translated from Polish into Russian, Czech, English and Hungarian.

A special position in Dukajs work takes the symbolic- fantastic novel published in 2009, " Wroniec " ( portmanteau, German as " The Crow Man " ) a. The novel describes the experiences and traumas of a child during and shortly after the imposition of martial law in the Republic of Poland in December 1981. In brief, dream sequences not dissimilar flashbacks, sometimes deliberately kept in the style of fairy tale story, the violence of the police state with ruthless brutal special forces is and ubiquitous spies portrayed. The little boy runs in the face of brutal, destitute, colorless world of Polish big city and the brutality of the wrong state in the early 1980s in his dream world back and freed with the help of resistance fighter his abducted by state security family members. The title character of "Crow Man " embodies symbolically the military junta of General Wojciech Jaruzelski, who by their name " Wojskowa Rada Ocalenia Narodowego " ( Military Council of National Salvation ) popularly known pejoratively - ironically as " Wrona " ( German: " the Crow ") was abbreviated. The novel moves stylistically between allegorical prose miniatures in the style of Zbigniew Herbert's " Mr. Cogito ", the South American prose of " magical realism " and metaphorically lyrical narrative in the style of Michael Ende. Given the numerous allusions to the former language of the Republic of Poland, the novel is hardly translatable into other languages.
