Jack Cooper, Baron Cooper of Stockton Heath

John "Jack" Cooper, Baron Cooper of Stockton Heath, of Stockton Heath in the County Palatine of Chester, JP (* June 7, 1908; † 2 September 1988) was a British trade union official and Labour Party politician, who a short time member of the House of Commons, as well as long-time general secretary of the union was NUGMW and 1966 was as a life peer, due to the Life peerages Act 1958 a member of the House of Lords.

Life

Cooper was elected in the general election of 23 February 1950 as the candidate of the Labour Party as a delegate in the House of Commons and represented in this until his election defeat at the next general election on 25 October 1951 Deptford constituency. At the same time he was also a Parliamentary private secretary of a minister in the government of Prime Minister Clement Attlee during this time.

In 1962, he was the successor of Tom Williamson General Secretary of the General and community workers ( National Union of General and Municipal Workers ) and held this function in one of the UK's largest trade unions to his replacement by David Basnett 1973.

By Letters Patent of July 11, 1966 Cooper was, who was at times also Justice of the Peace ( Justice of the Peace ), due to the Life peerages Act 1958 as life peer with the title Baron Cooper of Stockton Heath, of Stockton Heath in the County Palatine of Chester raised to the peerage. Its introduction ( Introduction) in the House of Lords took place on July 13, 1966 by Baron Williamson and Walter Citrine, 1st Baron Citrine. He thus belonged to until his death in the House of Lords as a member.

Furthermore, it was established in 1971 by Sidney Greene successor as President of the Trades Union Congress (TUC ), the umbrella organization of trade unions in Britain. This post he held until 1972 and was then replaced by George Smith.
