Jack Hildyard

Jack Hildyard (born 17 March 1908 in London, England; † September 9, 1990 ) was a British cinematographer, who has worked in over 80 movies. The sound designer and two-time Academy Award winner David Hildyard ( Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret ) is his brother.

Life and work

Hildyard began in 1932 as a film clapper at Elstree Studios. In 1934, he was responsible for Marcel Varnels film Freedom of the Seas as first assistant camera ( focus puller ) for image sharpness. In the following years he worked among others for the chief cameraman Harry Stradling Sr. ( The novel of a flower girl and a visit to the night, both 1938), Mutz Greenbaum ( Pimpernel Smith, 1941) and Robert Krasker ( The Sacred Fire, 1943 and Henry V, 1944) as a camera operator. In 1945 he was one next to Jack Cardiff, Robert Krasker and Freddie Young at the cameramen of the film Caesar and Cleopatra by Gabriel Pascal. At Peter Ustinov's film " School for Secrets " from the 1946 Jack Hildyard first worked as director of photography.

1952 saw the start of Hildyard and director David Lean, for which he films The Sound Barrier (1952 ), master of the house I am (1954 ), Dream of my life (1955) and The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957 ) photographed. For the latter work Hildyard received the 1957 Oscar for best color photography.

In 1970 Jack Hildyard turned with Arab filmmakers, including Muhammad - The Messenger of God ( 1976) and Omar Mukhtar - Lion of the Desert (1979 ), both of which were created under the direction of Moustapha Akkad.

Jack Hildyard was 1949 founding members of the British Society of Cinematographers, which honored him in 1990 with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
