Jack Wilkins

Jack Wilkins ( born June 3, 1944 in Brooklyn, New York ) is an American jazz and fusion guitarist.

Life and work

Wilkins learned at the age of ten years playing the guitar; he was educated by private tutors only. At the age of 18 he began - first in local bands - his career as a professional musician before he worked with Chet Baker, Buddy Rich and Stan Getz. In 1973, he presented with Windows before his first album. In the late 1970s he was also involved in studio productions of Charles Mingus (Me, Myself & Eye). He also played with Stanley Turrentine, Jimmy Heath and Bob Brookmeyer. He accompanied the vocalists Mel Tormé, Ray Charles, Morgana King, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, The Manhattan Transfer, Nancy Marano, Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton. In the late 1970s he also worked with Eddie Gomez, Jack DeJohnette and the brothers Michael and Randy Brecker, who participated on his album Merge. In the 1990s, he then with musicians like Kenny Drew Jr., Steve LaSpina or Jeff Hirshfield took more albums under his own name for the label Claves and Arabesque. In 2000 they created the reunion album with the Brecker Brothers, Gomez and DeJohnette on the label Chiaroscuro. He has collaborated several times with at performances of Mingus ' Epitaph large format.

Wilkins was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. He lives in New York City and teaches at the New School, New York University, Long Iceland University and the Manhattan School of Music. His students included u.a Torsten Goods.
