Phil Markowitz

Philip L. " Phil" Markowitz ( born September 6, 1952 in New York City ) is an American musician ( keyboardist, composer ) of the fusion jazz, but also emerged as a lyrical companion on the acoustic piano.

Leen and work

Markowitz had since the age of four piano lessons from the age of eight lessons in composition. He studied at the Eastman School of Music. The band Peter, founded by him in this period was presented at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1973 as the meistversprechendste fusion group. From 1975 he worked with Nick Brignola, Jeremy Steig and Joe Chambers, but soon also with Toots Thielemans, with Miroslav Vitouš and with Chet Baker, with whom he had several times in Europe until 1983. He was also heard with Bob Berg, Al Di Meola, the Brecker Brothers, and Stan Getz, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie and Mel Lewis. With Eddie Gomez and Al Foster, he took 1980 ( later released ) album " Sno Peas " before he released his debut album in 1983 grossed. In 1985 he founded a trio with Airto Moreira and Di Meola, which was then extended with Chip Jackson and Danny Gottlieb quintet and the album " Soaring Through a Dream" published. In 1987 he became a member of the big band by Bob Mintzer; since 1990, he was with Dave Liebman, with which he presented albums like " Miles Away" or " Voyage", traveling internationally. In addition, he continues to maintain his own trio and in recent years with Joe Lovano, Liebman and Ravi Coltrane Saxophone Summit on the go. Markowitz worked as a high school teacher, first at the Mannes College and now teaches at the Manhattan School of Music. But he gives master classes at the University of Miami, the Eastman School and in Europe. He has won several composition awards.
