Jacob Caro

Jacob Caro ( born February 2, 1835 in Gniezno, † December 12, 1904 in Breslau) was a German historian and university professor.

Life and work

Caro came from an old rabbinical family: his father was the German - Russian Rabbi Chaim Joseph Caro. After attending high school in Poznań, he studied at University of Berlin and Leipzig University history and philosophy. He completed his PhD on the topic over the choice King Siegi Munds III. of Poland. In 1862 he undertook study trips to Galicia and southern Russia. Although his application was turned down with the monograph The party fights the houses Zborowski and Zamoyski, he was in 1863 admitted to the University of Jena as a lecturer in history.

In Jena he received from the publisher Perthes the order to continue the begun by Richard Roepell with the book history of Poland, First part book series about the history of Poland for the Perthessche compilation history of the European states. He went for half a year to St. Petersburg, where he did archival studies. He lived there then some years at the court of Tsar Alexander II and was traveling companion of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna. An offer to continue his career in the Russian civil service, he struck out. After 1863 his book History of Poland, Second Part ( 1300-1386 ) was published, he returned in 1865 as a lecturer at the University of Jena back.

In 1869 he was appointed an honorary professor at the University of Breslau, where he was appointed in 1876 as an associate professor of history. After he had written a further continuation volume for the Perthessche collective work, he was honored by the University of Breslau with the award of the title professor honoris causa. In 1884 he was appointed full professor in Breslau. For the above collective work published by him in the period 1863-1886 a total of volumes II through V.

His scientific interest was primarily the history, culture and literature of the Slavic peoples. Besides his teaching was Jacob Caro 1869-1875 also at the Foreign Office in Berlin worked. At times, he was rector of the University of Breslau.
