Jacobus Oud

Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud ( born February 9, 1890 in Purmerend, † April 5, 1963 in Wassenaar ), called Bob Oud and also known as JJP Oud, was a Dutch architect and author.

He was from 1917 to 1921 member of the artist group De Stijl and is considered one of the main proponents of functionalism. His brother, Pieter Oud was mayor of Rotterdam.

Life and work

Oud studied in Amsterdam and Delft. He studied under Peter Josephus Hubertus Cuypers Jan Stuyt and the German architect Theodor Fischer. In 1914 he settled in Leiden. There he met Theo van Doesburg. For the magazine " De Stijl " he wrote 1917-1920 some contributions to architecture.

1918 to 1933 he was city architect in Rotterdam. Due to the residences and settlements, which he built in the twenties in Rotterdam, he was also one of the internationally best-known representatives of the International Style. In 1954 he was appointed by the Technical University of Delft honorary doctorate.
