Jacopo Riccati

Jacopo Francesco Riccati ( born May 28, 1676 in Venice, † April 15, 1754 in Treviso) was an Italian mathematician. He is best known for his investigations of differential equations and the methods to reduce the order of equations.

Riccati came from a wealthy Venetian nobility and studied law at the University of Padua. He became interested in mathematics by his friend Stefano Degli Angeli and published from 1710. He worked in Venice and stood with numerous scientists in contact. An offer to be president of the Academy in St. Petersburg to be, he struck out to stay in Venice, where he among other things, the Senate advised the construction of dams and channels.

He looked at several general classes of differential equations and found solution methods that have been adopted by many (including Daniel Bernoulli ). Particular detail, he has one of the named after him Riccati equations studied ( Acta Eruditorum 1722/3 ). His works were published in 1758 in Treviso and in 2nd edition 1761-1765 in Lucca.

The mathematician Vincenzo Riccati (1707 - 1775), professor at Bologna, was his son.

His name is sometimes misspelled Ricatti.
