Jacques-Louis Soret

Jacques -Louis Soret (* June 30, 1827 in Geneva, † May 13, 1890 ) was a Swiss chemist and physicist.

Soret taught chemistry from 1873 and from 1876 medical physics at the University of Geneva. There he discovered in 1878 along with Marc Delafontaine the element holmium.

He first described the structure of ozone as a modification of the triatomic oxygen.

The Soret band, a strong absorption in the UV / VIS spectrum of the porphyrins, is named after him.

His son is the physicist and chemist Charles Soret ( 1854-1904 ).
