Jaime de Zudáñez

Jaime de Zudañez ( born July 25, 1772 in Chuquisaca, now Sucre, † 1832 in Montevideo) was a Bolivian politician and active as a fighter for independence in several South American countries.

Life

Zudañez was born in present-day Sucre, which belonged at that time as Chuquisaca to Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. In 1792, he finished at the city's Universidad San Francisco Xavier his law studies and moved to the Academia Carolina, where he received his doctorate in 1795.

Zudañez was a central figure of the Revolution of Chuquisaca, which began on May 25, 1809 in Sucre, but was quickly put down. Zudañez was arrested and sent to Callao in Peru as a prisoner. After his release, he traveled to Chile in 1811, where he joined the local independence movement among the generals Bernardo O'Higgins and Juan Mackenna joined. In 1814 he was able to evade capture after the crushing defeat at the Battle of Rancagua and fled to Argentina.

From 1817 to 1819 Zudañez was Vice President of the Congress of Tucumán, which met at that time in Buenos Aires. From 1820 on he lived in Montevideo and was a member of the Uruguayan Constituent Assembly from 1828 to 1830.

Appreciation

After the politicians, the Bolivian province Jaime Zudañez and the small town Zudañez were named. Both are located in the department of Chuquisaca.
