Jaime Silva (Portugal)

Jaime de Jesus Lopes Silva ( born February 21, 1954 in Almeida ) is a Portuguese politician of the Socialist Party (PS) and since 2005 Minister of Agriculture in the cabinet Sócrates I.

Life

He completed his studies in economics at the Higher Institute of Economics and Management (Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão ) of the Technical University of Lisbon with the usual Lizenziatur ( Licenciatura ).

Shortly after graduating, he entered the service of the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture ( Ministério da Agricultura ), where he performed a variety of tasks. Among others, he was one of the chief negotiators in the drafting of the European Common Agricultural Policy. He was also chairman of the department food industry in the Directorate General for Economic and Industry of the European Commission.

Between 2001 and 2002, Jaime Silva was the chief adviser to the Permanent Representation of Portugal to the European Union in Brussels. After the early parliamentary elections in February 2005, in which the Portuguese Socialists won an absolute majority for the first time, called the designated Prime Minister José Sócrates Silva as the new Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries.
