Jakob Erbar

Erbar Jacob ( born August 2, 1878 in Dusseldorf, † July 1, 1935 in Cologne ) was a German typographer, typeface designer and teacher.

Life

Jacob Erbar learned typesetter in Dusseldorf, where he attended writing courses with Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke and Anna Simons at the art school. He worked until 1908 in Cologne at the printers M. DuMont as Akzidenzsetzer and then as a teacher at the city's vocational school. In 1920 he was appointed by Martin Elsaesser at the School of Applied Arts in Cologne and then was - from 1926 until his death in 1935 - Technical teacher for font - set letterpress with Prof. Richard Riemerschmid at the Cologne factory schools (one of the predecessor institutions of today's University of Applied Sciences Cologne).

Font designs

Between 1910 and 1936 Erbar created a series of writings. When his best-known type design applies named after him " Erbar -Grotesk " in several typefaces. The 1922 -Grotesk was designed Erbar typographer Paul Renner as a model for the Futura. There was in the cast program different versions of letters, including the common "a" the " Antiqua " shape or the constructed " grotesque form."

The " Candida ", a further developed by him font is now installed by default in various word processing programs. All Fonts by Jakob Erbar were produced by the former Frankfurt foundry Ludwig & Mayer, whose font collection 1984, the Spanish company Neufville Digital took over.
