James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas

James Douglas ( * ca 1358; † August 14, 1388 in Otterburn ) was a Scottish nobleman, 2nd Earl of Douglas and Earl of Mar.

James was the elder son of William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas and his first wife Margaret Countess of Mar. He succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Douglas in 1384. Since 1371 he was married to Isabella Stewart, daughter of the Scottish king Robert II

James fell in the Battle of Otterburn on August 14, 1388 and is buried in Melrose, Roxburgshire.

Since he left only two illegitimate sons: William, 1st Lord of Drumlanrig ( ancestor of the Duke of Queensberry ) and Archibald ( progenitor of Douglas of Cavers family), the cousin of his father Archibald succeeded him as 3rd Earl of Douglas.
