Duke of Queensberry

Duke of Queensberry is a British peerage in the Peerage of Scotland, named after a hill in southern Scotland.

Ancestral home of the Dukes of Queensbury is Drumlanrig Castle, which was built by the first Duke.

Award

The title Duke of Queensberry in 1684 for William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Queensbury, created. This was an important jurist of his time. He was particularly Lord Justice General and then after that was Lord High Treasurer of Scotland.

Subordinate title

Subordinate title of the Duke of Queensbury are ( created 1682) Marquess of Dumfriesshire ( created 1684), Earl of Drumlanrig and Sanquhar ( created 1682), Viscount of Nith, Tortholwald and Ross ( created 1682) and Lord Douglas of Kilmount, Middlebie and Dornock. These titles are all in the Peerage of Scotland.

The heir apparent led the courtesy title Earl of Drumlanrig.

More titles

The first Duke had already in 1682 been awarded the dignity of Marquess of Queensbury. This title is shared with the downstream titles Earl of Queensberry ( created 1633), Viscount Drumlanrig ( created 1628), Baron Drumlanrig ( created before 1427) and Lord Douglas of Hawick and Tibbers ( created 1628), who inherited the first Duke of his ancestors had, now run by another branch of the family. These titles are in the Peerage of Scotland. The same applies to the dignity of a baronet of Kelhead.

1708 the second Duke was also appointed Duke of Dover in the Peerage of Great Britain with the same downstream conferred titles Marquess of Beverley and Baron Ripon. These titles became extinct with the death of the third Duke in 1778.

Upon the death of the fourth Duke in 1810 the Dukedom fell to Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch. Since that time, both dukedoms are managed jointly. The respective Duke is one of only five people in the United Kingdom, which leads two dukedoms.
