Marquess of Queensberry

Marquess of Queensberry is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland, named after a hill in Scotland. It is worn by members of the Clan Douglas.

Award

The title was in 1682 for William Douglas, 3rd Earl of Queensberry, created. He was chief judge and after the survey was then Chancellor of the Exchequer in Scotland.

His ancestors led before 1427 the feudal titles Baron Drumlanrig, who, however, like all Scottish baronies - unlike the English barony is not included among the titles of nobility. The 9th Baron had been collected in 1628 for Viscount of Drumlanrig and 1633 Earl of Queensberry.

Subordinate title

Subordinate title of Marquess of Queensberry are Earl of Queensberry ( created 1633), Viscount of Drumlanrig ( created 1628) and Lord Douglas of Hawick and Tibbers ( created 1628), all in the Peerage of Scotland.

The Marquess is also a Scottish baronet, of Kelhead. This title was created in 1668 for a relative and is run by the Marquesses since 1784.

The eldest son and heir of the Marquess takes the courtesy title Viscount Drumlanrig, whose eldest son has, in contrast no courtesy title.

More titles

From 1684 to 1810, the Marquesses were simultaneously Dukes of Queensberry, after this title was awarded to the first Marquess. The Dukedom was 1810, the Dukes of Buccleuch and is still owned by them.

The second Duke of Queensberry was appointed in 1708 to the Duke of Dover in the Peerage of Great Britain. This title became extinct in 1778 with the death of the third Duke of Queensberry and second Duke of Dover.

1893 was the eldest son and heir apparent of the 9th Marquess, Francis Archibald Douglas, raised to Baron Kelhead in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He died childless in the following year, so the title became extinct again.
