Life and work

James Ogilvy was the son of James Ogilvy, 6th Earl of Findlater and 3rd Earl of Seafield (ca. 1714-1770 ), and Lady Mary Murray ( 1720-1795 ), the second daughter from the second marriage of John Murray, 1st Duke of Atholl ( 1660-1724 ). James only brother John died in 1763. Ogilvy studied at Oxford, then left the British Isles, and married in 1779 in Brussels Christina Teresa Murray ( † 1813), with whom he lived for a short together. Christina Teresa was the daughter of Sir Joseph Murray, Count of Melgum, Baronet of Nova Scotia, including Lieutenant General in the army of the Holy Roman Empire.

Because of his homosexual tendencies Ogilvy was expelled from his native country. He received in Dresden the mansion Help Mountain and several contiguous vineyard plots at the Dresden Elbe hillside on which he had built by the architect and master builder Johann August Giesel a palace. On the foundations of the palace, the completion of Ogilvy did not live, Albrecht Berg castle was built later. At his death in 1811 the title of Earl of Findlater became extinct. The title Earl of Seafield went over to his cousin Sir Lewis Alexander Grant (1767-1840), who also took the surname of Ogilvy.

Ogilvy acquired in Dresden lands, which are also known as Findlater's Vineyard or Findlater shear vineyard, located in the northwestern corner of Loschwitz between the Elbe and Bautzen road, adjacent to Saloppe and Dinglinger vineyard. Today they are the location of the three river Elbe.
