James Shaw Hay

Sir James Shaw Hay KCMG (* October 25, 1839, † June 20, 1924 ) was a British colonial administrator.

Life

Hay served in the 89th Regiment of Foot in British India during the Indian Uprising of 1857. Subsequently, he joined the colonial Used and has worked in the Gold Coast ( 1875-1880 ). As Inspector General of Police was then in Mauritius (1880-1885) worked.

He was then provided as a British administrator in British Gambia. He reached Bathurst ( former name of Banjul) in February 1886, then left the Gambia in June back towards Freetown, to act as deputy governor of Sierra Leone. Hay did not return to Bathurst. After the death of Governor Samuel Rowe, he was promoted to Governor of Sierra Leone ( 1888-1891 ). Later he was employed in the same position in Barbados ( 1892-1900 ).
