Jan Delay

Jan Delay ( born February 20, 1976 in Hamburg -Eppendorf; bourgeois: Jan Phillip Eißfeldt ) is a German hip-hop, reggae, soul, rock and funk musician. He is a member of the group Beginner and also as a solo artist active.

Biography

Jan Delay attended from 1986 to 1995, the Helene -Lange -Gymnasium in Hamburg, where he took the Abitur.

Jan Delay is a third of the Beginner (formerly Absolute Beginner ) to make the drip formation La Boom. Another name of the hamburger, which he used on several underground publications used ( the Eimsbush -Style League ) is, among other things, Boba Frich (based on Boba Fett, a character from Star Wars ). As Eizi Eiz or Eißfeldt it occurs as part of the Beginner, while he used the pseudonym Jan Delay mainly as a solo artist and in the genres of reggae and funk. The pseudonym Jan Delay is firstly a nod to the in the 90's briefly successful rapper Young Deenay. Secondly, delay in English means delay and is also the name of a supporting effect in the Reggae-/Dancehallmusik, ( with the reverberation is an important style element in reggae and especially in the dub ).

In 1997 he founded together with some fellow musicians, the label Eimsbush, which was forced to declare bankruptcy in 2003.

His solo album Searching for the Soul Rebels January, which he recorded together with the Sam Ragga band was praised by the critics, he mixed it with skill and sometimes innovative styles of music. The title alludes to the debut album Searching for the Young Soul Rebels Dexys Midnight Runners of. This album was produced in close collaboration with producer Matthias Arfmann who co-produced, among others, also the first album by the reggae artist Patrice and the first two albums from the Beginner.

In August 2006, his second solo album, titled Mercedes- Dance, in collaboration with his new band Disko No.. Appeared 1, and with Matthias Arfmann & drip emerged as co- producer. This is in stark contrast to his debut album, the intro Jan Delay says already: "Reggae is dead, now radio is off ". The plate is determined by jazz tones with strong radio - elements. It reached number one on the German charts in its first week. The lyrics are sometimes not as sozial-/politikkritisch as his earlier works, which it also addresses in the intro. There is also a live album and a DVD of Mercedes- Dance was published. Previously, the single Klar has been published.

In live performances, he works with the radio band Disko No.. 1 together. With the song Fire Jan Delay took on 9 February 2007 in part for the state of Hamburg on 3 Federal Vision Song Contest and reached the second place. On 7 July 2007, he appeared in Hamburg at Live Earth. Delay speaks the German dubbing voice of Japeth the goat in the movie Hoodwinked and vectors in the movie I - Despicable.

In 2009 he collaborated with the radio station 1 Live and gave to the winner of the sender 's own school duel a concert with around 1,500 students, graduates and teachers. After a collaboration with Udo Lindenberg at the comeback album Strong as two published Jan Delay August 2009 We Children from Bahnhof Soul his third solo album, musically as its predecessor also greatly inspired by funk and soul, his own words the attempt to previous album " again in properly and really good " to make. Like its predecessor, Mercedes Dance and We Children from Bahnhof Soul reached number one in the German album charts.

The Hamburg- film Soul Kitchen (2009) by Fatih Akın has been extensively modified by the director after delay had said after a preview Akın over, the film had " not yet the right groove ." By his own admission he meant the " dramaturgical hole" that existed in his opinion in the first version of the film.

In June 2010, the second live album by Jan Delay published with the title We Children from Bahnhof Soul Live, which contains analogous to Mercedes Dance Live live recordings from the tour for his album from last year. 14 May 2011 Delay entered the final of the Euro Vision Song Contest 2011 in Dusseldorf, together with Disko No.. 1 on.

For the April 11, 2014 Jan Delay has announced the album " Hammer & Michel " in rock style.

Political statements

In his songs, " Delay railed against the power of large corporations, [ ... ] [and hacks ] on German uptight characteristics around". In addition, he is involved in a radio quota for German -language pop music. He expressed his sympathy for offenses of the Black Bloc during demonstrations, supported the protests to the G8 summit in Heiligendamm and sees violence in the form of damage to property, because they in his opinion is not directed as a legitimate means of agitation against persons.

Jan Delay is also committed to reading and writing skills in the context of the campaign iCHANCE, which is carried out by the Federation Literacy and basic education. In 2012, he supported the Oxfam Campaign With food you do not play! against food speculation. He is also a CSR ambassador of the action Lifetime tolerant of the football club Werder Bremen, beats for his heart.
