Johann Kupetzky, Johann Kupecky, Kupezky or czech January Kupecký (* probably in 1667 Bazin / Bösing, Kingdom of Hungary, now Pezinok, Slovakia, † July 16, 1740 in Nuremberg) was a Bohemian portrait painter of the Baroque.

Life

Kupetzky came from a deeply religious family of weavers. His parents belonged to the Bohemian Brethren, the ( present-day Slovakia) fled for their faith in the Kingdom of Hungary. There Kupetzky grew up and received his first art lessons. In the spring of 1682 Kupetzky went to Switzerland to study painting in Lucerne. A few years later he studied at the Vienna Academy. Supported by his teachers there, Kupetzky undertook to 1685 a study trip to Italy. In Rome he worked for 22 years as a freelance artist. His artistic work from this period includes not only history paintings and landscapes also been many portraits, for which he was later to receive a high level of awareness.

To 1708/ 09 Kupetzky, an appeal of Prince Adam of Liechtenstein returned following, returned to Austria and settled in Vienna. He soon became a favorite of the Emperor Leopold I and Joseph I, and therefore of the whole Viennese nobility through his portraits. This caused envy to the plan, which was open to attack Kupetzky about his confession. Actions based on his faith ultimately sold Kupetzky 1723 from Vienna and he settled in Nuremberg.

The portraits that Kupetzky had created and which combine its high in painting and the psychological detecting the portrayed personality, were not least also famous for their renditions in printmaking.

After his death Kupetzky was said to have been a member of the secret society "Wolf Order," but this was never proven.

In Vienna, where he had lived long, 1953 Kupetzkygasse was named after the artist.

Student

Numerous draperies in the works of Johann Kupetzky come from the hand of Gabriel Müller, epithet Kupetzky -Müller, who was regarded as the best student of Kupetzky. Other students were John Andreas Brendel, Samuel Gottlieb Hanrich, Noah Johann von Bemmel, Ignaz Franz Roth and Conrad Mannlich.

Importance
