Jan Martyniak

Jan Martyniak, even Ivan Martyniak, Joan Martyniak or John Martyniak, ( born June 20, 1939 in Spas, Poland ) is the reigning Archbishop and Metropolitan of Przemysl -Warsaw for the " Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church " in Poland.

Life

January Martyniak whose parents Vasyl and Maria Martyniak manage a farm, was baptized in the Greek Catholic Church in Terszowie. The religious life in his birthplace was located close to the monastery of the Basilian St. Jehoshaphat strongly influenced. His father died during the Second World War, when Russian soldier in a prison camp near Dresden. In 1946 the family Martyniak was expelled and settled in Lower Silesia. At his new home January Martyniak attended primary school, after which he went to a grammar school in 1958 and earned a high school. He then studied at the seminary of Breslau and was ordained in 1964 by Bishop Bolesław Kominek a priest.

He was then a year working as a curate in a Roman Catholic church in 1964 and wanted to start a postgraduate course in Italy. Since the Polish authorities denied him the issue of a passport, he continued his studies in apologetics at the Catholic Theological Academy in Warsaw (now Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw - ) continuous. From 1969-1970 he was an assistant at the seminary in Breslau and held in 1973 at the Theological Academy lectures. On 22 December 1981, the Polish Primate Cardinal Józef Glemp appointed him vicar-general and entrusted him with the care of the Greek Catholic believers in Poland.

Episcopate

On July 20, 1989, Pope John Paul II appointed auxiliary bishop in Przemysl, Sambor, and Sanok and appointed him titular bishop of Vardimissa. On September 16, 1989 Martyniak was consecrated by Cardinal Myroslaw Ljubatschiwskyj and the co-consecrators Archbishop Miroslaw Marusyn ( Secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches ) and Bishop Basil Harry mustards ( Bishop of Stamford, USA) a bishop. His appointment as bishop of the Ruthenian Przemys on 16 January 1991. According to the restructuring of the dioceses of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Poland, he was on 24 May 1996 to the Archbishop and Metropolitan of Przemysl -Warsaw appointed.

Consecrations

Archbishop Martyniak dedicated following priests as bishops: Włodzimierz Juszczak OSBM Bishop of Wroclaw - Gdansk, Petro Kryk titular bishop of Castra Martis ( Apostolic Exarch of Germany and Scandinavia) and Josyf Milan MSU titular bishop of Drusiliana ( Auxiliary Bishop of Kyiv - Halych ).

As Mitkonsekrator he assisted in Julian Gbur, SVD titular bishop of Bareta ( Auxiliary Bishop of Lviv ), Wassylij Medwit OSBM titular bishop of Hadriane ( Auxiliary Bishop of Lviv ), Teodor Majkowicz Bishop of Wroclaw Gdansk and Mykola Simkaylo Bishop of Kolomyia - Chernivtsi.

Awards

  • 2005 Bishop Martyniak was appointed Knight of the "Order of Polonia Restituta " and awarded the Order of the Cross.
  • In 2007 he was with the Ukrainian " Jareslaw - Order," which is named after Yaroslav the Wise, honored.
