Jandek

Jandek is an American musician who probably lives in Houston, Texas, or the surrounding area. Since 1978 he has released more than 40 albums with experimental, folk and blues - influenced music, all on his ( presumably) own label called Corwood Industries, without ever revealing biographical details or his true identity.

By 2004, Jandek has never come public appearance and a few journalists succeeded so far, to have a conversation with him. There is no regular distribution of its plates, only a post office box address in Houston. In 2004 he appeared for the first time, completely unannounced, in the context of a music festival in Glasgow on. Since then, there have been some more concerts, especially in the UK and the USA, but also in Belgium and Helsinki without the veil of anonymity was fully ventilated. What seems certain is only so much that Jandek with real names Sterling R. Smith is, to have been born around 1950 and has lived in Houston and works (but possibly not from there comes ). Some concerts have now been released as CDs and DVDs.

Yandex music is unique: The songs have hardly a conventional structure and resemble most free jazz or folk improvisations, without, however, accept specific terms of any musical style. The texts, usually presented in a kind of chant, are stylistically the lyrics of blues or country songs comparable, but also contain Biblical allusions, some songs seem pure nonsense and Dada texts.

Despite the seclusion Yandex and the isolated nature of his music, he has acquired a certain reputation in the American Underground: Kurt Cobain or Will Oldham have quoted him, musicians from Sonic Youth, Wilco or Tortoise added cover versions of Jandek songs or are occurred to him, a noted documentary - Jandek on Corwood - sat down with the myth apart around him.
