János Kajdi

János Kajdi ( born December 30, 1939 in Szombathely, † April 10, 1992 in Budapest) was a Hungarian boxer. He was winner of the silver medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich welterweight and two-time European champion amateur boxer.

Career

János Kajdi began in 1950 in Szombathely " Dosza " with the boxes. In 1955 he moved to Komaromi " Melyepitök " 1958 Sztalinvarosi " Vasas " and after entry into the Hungarian army in 1960 to " Honved " Budapest. Being physically strong and robust type János Kajdi also had an excellent technique that enabled him to excellence.

In 1960 he succeeded indeed already made ​​it into the Hungarian national team, but not qualifying for the Hungarian Olympic team for the Games in Rome. In 1961 he was first Hungarian championship in the lightweight (then to 60 kg body weight) and thus qualified for the European Championship in Belgrade. He delivered there from good fights and won about Gustav Simonica, Romania and Sabri Giuseppe from Italy. In the semifinals he met the Scottish Olympic champion Richard McTaggart, he was defeated by the on points. He thus won the European Championship bronze medal his first medal at an international championship. In the same year he won in Sofia and in the 2nd Army Championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact countries ( SKDA championship). In the final he defeated there Jürgen Martsch from the GDR.

In 1962 he won in Kromirz / CSSR back at SKDA Championship at lightweight. He defeated the Soviet athletes there Gennadi Kakoschkin on points. Other international championships were not held this year.

1963 took place in Moscow again instead of European Championships amateur boxer. Janos Kajdi started there again at lightweight. He won over Jacques Cotot, France, Josef Grudzien, Poland, Tauno Halonen, Finland and in the final over Boris Nikanorow from the USSR respectively on points and grabbing himself the first European title of his career.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 János Kajdi hoped to win a medal. He also won his first two fights. He suggested Ramrasad Gurung from Nepal in the first -round knockout and won over Alex Odhiambo of Uganda on points. In the quarter finals he met Wilikton Barannikow from the USSR and had to play this a surprising knockout loss in the 2nd round to accept, so the dream was shattered by winning a medal.

In 1965 János Kajdi paused at the Hungarian Cup and the European Championship. He won towards the end of a well-staffed tournament in Ostrava, where he first started in Light Welterweight ( 63.5 Kg class to body weight).

In 1966, he celebrated three major tournaments wins. International tournaments began in those years the hitherto customary international matches more and more to replace. He won the 6th Honved Cup in Budapest and at the extremely strong field - Dutch Tulips -Tournament in Rotterdam respectively in the light welterweight. At the European Championships 1967 in Rome, where he was in the Light Welterweight at the start, János Kajdi triumphed over Jean -Paul Bigot from France and Antonio Vasile from Romania on points. In the semifinals, but he was defeated by Jerzy Kulej from Poland just 3-2 judges votes and was only on the 3rd place.

Resigned, he had not for a long time. He showed at the European Championships 1971 in Madrid. Now already 32 years old he mastered there the welterweight and celebrated victories over Dave Davis, Wales, Victor Zilberman from Romania and Celal Sandal from Turkey. He was thus in the final against the Olympic champion from 1968 Manfred cloud from the GDR. In this struggle, this time he had the lucky ability on his side, because he won with 3-2 judges votes and thus became the second time European champions.

As an encore, he won in 1971 in Miskolc again the SKDA Championship with a points victory over the Soviet athlete Vladimir Musalimow.

In 1972 János Kajdi wanted to win an Olympic medal at the Olympic Games in Munich finally. He managed to do. He won in his first fight on Vrij Johan from the Netherlands on points, then hit Damdinaav Bandi from Mongolia in the second -round knockout and won the quarter-finals on Maurice Hope from the United Kingdom and in the semifinals on Richard Murunga from Kenya on points. In the final he met the Cuban Emilio Correa, one of the best boxers of those years at all and had to admit defeat with this 0:5 judges' votes. But he had finally won the silver medal in his third Olympic Games an Olympic medal.

Then János Kajdi resigned as an active boxer. He was for many years active as a coach in the sport of boxing. He is dead at age 53 in 1992.
