János Váradi

János Váradi ( born February 28, 1961 in Kemecse, Szabolcs -Szatmár -Bereg ) is a retired Hungarian boxer. Váradi was bronze medalist of the 1980 Olympic Games and the World Championships in 1986 and silver medalist at the European Championships in 1983, 1987 and 1989.

Career

In the youth level ( U19) was Váradi bronze medalist of the World Championships in 1979 and European champion in 1980.

At the Olympic Games in 1980 Váradi reached after victories over Rabiraj Thapa, Nepal (RSC 1 ), and Daniel Radu, Romania ( 4:1), the semi-finals in the flyweight (-51 kg). In this he was later silver medalist Viktor Miroshnichenko, Soviet Union, against which he was defeated 4-1 judges' votes and thus was eliminated with a bronze medal from the tournament.

In 1981, he retired at the European Championships in the quarter- finals from, but in 1983 he reached the final, which he lost to Petar Lessow, Bulgaria ( 5:0 ). Began in 1984 Váradi due to the Olympic boycott of his country at the competitions of friendship in Havana and won a bronze medal.

In 1985, he failed at the European Championships in the quarterfinals at the World Championships the following year, however, he reached the semi-finals, which he lost to Pedro Orlando Reyes, Cuba (4:1). At the European Championships in 1987, won again Váradi a silver medal. In the final he lost to Andreas Tews, East Germany (5-0 ). Against this he left also at the 1988 Olympics in the second round.

His last international medal winning Váradi 1989 at the European Championships. After he had reached the final, he lost in this prematurely against Yuri Arbatschakow, Soviet Union (RSC 3 ). The world championships in the same year ended for him already in the second round against Arbatschakow.

1990 Váradi was professional. He finished his career in 1991 after five fights again to have won without a title.
