Current vehicle developments

The opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen from Aomori to Hokuto 2015, the Seikan Tunnel for the currently slow moving freight trains no longer be available due to missing routes. Therefore, the JR Hokkaido and JR Freight working on concepts 200 km / h high-speed freight trains. This should be able to use the route, together with the Shinkansen in mixed traffic. For this purpose the Schnellfahrlok EH 800 is developed, which is then the so-called Train on Train (トレインオン· ·トレイン, Torein on Torein, dt " train leaves train " ) to draw. This project provides for the Cape gauge trains, similar to drive as the trolley system on a standard gauge train set fully dressed. This protects the cargo from the pressure fluctuations by oncoming rail vehicles in the tunnel.

Goods in transit

The cargo volume of JR Freight has been declining for years. Transported to the founding in 1987 56.3 million tons of cargo in 2005 was only 37.1 million tons and 31.0 million tons in 2010. Conversely, the Containerisierungsrate increased significantly. Were moved only 25% of the mass of commodities in the container in the founding year, as it was in 2005 already 60 % and 2010, two-thirds. For this traffic, the JR Freight in total 62,600 own and 2,600 private specially suitable for the Japanese gauge container stops in front. A majority of the 10.5 million tons of non - containerized goods made in 2010 with 7.2 million tonnes of petroleum products and automobiles with 1.0 million tons.
